Gylfi Thor Gudmundsson
I am Icelandic, born in Reykjavik in 1977. As a child I moved around frequently. I lived 5 years in Sweden at the age of 9-14, and I still know a bit of Swedish. I attended Reykjavik University in Iceland where I received my B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in computer science in 2006 and 2009 respectively. During my masters I spent one term as an exchange student at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. In 2013 I defended my Ph.d. thesis, titled "Parallelism and Distribution for Very Large Scale Content Based Image Retrieval", and graduated with full honors from Rennes1 University in France. During my Ph.d. I was employed by INRIA in Rennes, with financial support from the Quaero Project. I was a member of the TexMex team and under the supervision of Dr. Laurent Amsaleg and Dr. Patrick Gros. Currently I am visiting scholar/PostDoc at UCB AMPLab, visiting from the LinkMedia team at INRIA in Rennes. My work involves the development and adaptation of large-scale content-based image retrieval algorithms to run on Spark.
